      Silent Fans 80mm and 120mm

Today I will be looking at Nexus silent fans in both 80mm and 120mm, Nexus do a lot of silent orientated products so were best to start than there fans.

First I am going to look at the 80mm and then move onto the 120s.

PART 1 – The 80mm

Taking the 90mm out of the box you will immediately notice the 3pin or 4 pin options, Before I put it in the case to test it lets look at the Specs.

As you can see the specs are pretty impressive when you consider this fan only operates at 1500 rpm with a noise level of 17.6 dB and still manages to push 20.2 CFM of air! Only one way to find out if this can really be true and that is to install it next to a  fan running at 2000 rpm with the same CFM levels well 21 1CFM I will then have a look at system temps and check they are the same levels or near (give or take 1c to allow for the slight difference in CFM between the two). In the meantime I will show you a few shots of it installed in the HTPC then move on to the results.

Well the test was funny I had to refit the old fan and redo the test 4 times because with the Nexus 80mm I was getting lower temps as well as it being  in Audible, you would have to put your ear right next to the case to hear it.

The test came out with the Nexus on top all the time for all temp tests I done, at first I thought I made a mistake but I retested and each time with the Nexus I was getting lower temps than with the generic 80mm. (noisy fan)

I am well impressed (also my HTPC has now gone completely silent the only thing I can hear from it now is the HDD noise nice.

PART 2 – The 120mm

Ok time to move onto the 120mm lets hope they do as well as there little 80mm brothers and my living room PC, this has a Watercooling kit and requires 2x 120mm front and rear as you can see from the photos at the top of the page these come in plain white boxes so I will just take them out (no point in showing you a single shot of a white square) to show you.

As you can see these have the same connectors as the 80mm but that’s the only likeness  the 120mm are orange and feel much more solid than the 80mm, these fans also have some pretty good specs to claim lets have a look at those

Features:

·              Real Silent, only 22.8 dB(A)

·              High airflow level, 36.87 CFM

·              3-wire for RPM monitoring

·              3-pin motherboard connector

·              two 4-pin connectors (male and female)

·              Approved by: TÜV, CE (EMC), UL

As you can see this 120mm is no light weight either pushing a pretty impressive  36 87 CFM wile only making 22 8 dB at 1000 RPM just the speed of the fan should let you know how silent it is.

I was as I said going to use these for the living room PC, these were as quiet as they claimed and pushed a good amount of airflow these are going to be put to one side ready for my watercooling setup, a good silent fan an ideal for any setup. You don’t have to be building a silent PC to use these but they will drop the acoustic levels of any setup. Nice!

Part 4 – Conclusion

Well to say I am impressed is an understatement I could write a long paragraph here about what a thought but I have explained this above what I will say is these have got to be the best silent fans I have come across and are highly recommended. If you want silence these are for you.

Pros

Well Packaged

Very quiet

Best choice for silence

Excellent value for money

Good airflows at low RPM

Cons

NONE!
