Introduction

AMD..... Well what can I say, my affair with AMD began quite some time ago with a k2 450mhz CPU, while it was not the best CPU around it clearly for the money was pretty close, I had a friend that was running a PII Extreme 450mhz CPU and we were both getting the same sort of performance. The only difference is he had paid out a fair bit more than me.

Now since then things have moved on quite a fair bit, in fact a huge amount, Intel released the P4 AMD released the AMD64, while the 64 was a good chip it did not quite match up to the Intel and that was the story for quite some time, even I would spend the Extra just to have the Intel. Don’t get me wrong AMD was not all that bad due to the price differences, But still Intel had the edge.

Now that may change as since the start of the year we have seen some great CPU releases from AMD and all at a great price, with the introduction of the new flagship, the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition can we expect to see better things?

The New CPU is based on both DDR2 and DD3 tech, so not only will it offer a good upgrade option, It makes it possible for those with older boards that support the 955 BE CPU will be able to use it still with their current DDR2 until they can afford the upgrade to a AM3 motherboard and some spanky new DDR3 ram.

All this sounds great does it not? Well either it will or won’t perform and that’s what we will be finding out today, Is the AM3 Phenom II 955 BE 3.2 worth its weight or not. Before we move on to test the CPU, let us take a look at the specs.
