Conclusion

The Toughpower XT 850W is a pleasure to use. Its large 140mm fan means it runs pretty quiet while still keeping the PSU cool. It also has an innovative fan delay cool feature which will keep the PSU fan running for up to 30seconds after the PC has been turned off to ensure that the PSU is kept cool while the components are still hot but the PC is off, which can only help to prolong the life of the PSU.

Thermaltake have made use of a single large 12v rail for making sure no power is trapped unusable in separate rails and so that you don’t have to balance out your high power devices properly across the different rails.

The modular design makes cable management a breeze, and the cables that are attached/included have plenty of length for routing how you want in even large cases.

The Toughpower XT can be found for around £120 online, which puts it in the middle of the main players 850W PSUs. Has it got the features to get over the other 850W PSUs out there? You’ll have to decide that for yourself.

Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850W deserves our recommended award.

Pros

  • Plenty of power
  • Large single 12v rail
  • Quiet 140mm fan
  • Fan delay cool feature

Cons

  • Price? (cheaper is always good)

Reality Check: The Thermaltake XT 850W is a great performer which runs cool and quiet and has several innovative features, but odds are you won’t notice them in use.
