When I was installing this power supply, at the back of my mind I was thinking that if it ended up being worse than the PSU it was replacing I would have to take everything back out and put the old one back in. So it was with a relief that I saw that this PSU was better than my previous one. Thermaltake has managed to combine some really great parts to make an excellent power supply. The 140mm fan is practically silent. I cannot hear it above any of the other fans in my case. When designing this PSU Thermaltake didn’t settle to just put in a large fan to reduce noise they designed one that is actually frameless, so it can drag air in from 5 sides instead of the regular 1. This also serves to reduce turbulence from the frame, which is another factor in reducing noise. The PSU is longer than my last one, but it isn’t particularly big, and still fits in my cramped P180 without blocking anything else (like the bottom chamber fan). The modular cables were also longer than the ones they replaced so it was slightly easier to connect them to the far away parts of the motherboard. I was impressed with how tight the rails were regulated in this PSU. Thermaltake says that they tune them to within 3% of the target voltage, but the rails on this PSU were within 1% nearly all of the time. I was unable to find a price for the QFan series at the time of writing, but Thermaltake has always priced its Toughpower series competitively so hopefully this should be no different.
Pros • Very tight voltage regulation • Near silent operation • Pretty logo on side instead of voltage specs • Long modular cables Cons • None Reality Check: Thermaltake have done it again with another solid Toughpower PSU. Voltage regulation is really tight and rails are pretty solid. If you are in the market for a midrange PSU, then this is definitely worth considering.
