Introduction

In spring 2001 the plans for a project begin, which later become the basis for establishing the company Aqua Computer. The three students from Göttingen Stefan May, Dino Secic and Stephan Wille begin developing a new water cooler. Preceding this many experiences in making water cooling for private use have been made, which also have been used for extreme cooling experiments.

The market for water cooling hasn't been developed yet very far. There were only a handful of vendors in Germany. Partly the technique wasn't very elaborated and optical designs of the cooling were rather unattractive. So the target of this project was to put a cooling element on the market with a good technique, an attractive design and high cooling performance at an affordable price.

With the 34th design we had developed a cooling element that satisfied all these requirements in our opinion. Due to the uncommon combination of the materials copper and plexiglass at that time the project got its appropriate name quite early: cuplex.

In May 2001 we decided to publish first images of the cuplex. This was mainly done on our website for extreme cooling projects (www.extrem-krass.de). The first reactions on this design already foreshadowed that the cuplex satisfied many wishes.  But there were still many tasks to be done and so we concentrated on testing of the quality in the first place and gained experiences with the materials used. Primarily we wanted to gain experiences about the long-life-stability of plexiglass. Also the stability of gaskets and connectors has been tested. For this purpose extreme pressures und temperature changes have been simulated. After a couple of small adjustments the cuplex 1.0 could be mass-produced in July 2001.

With that kind of history and dedication the two products we are looking at today should be up to there task. The first product in question is the Aquatube rev 1.1 reservoir and the Aquadrive Dual, a dual HDD watercooled block for 5.25 bays. Both devices have great promise so let us get on with the review and find out.
