Mafia II

Mafia II is sequel to a very good game, and while the die-hards would say it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, but playing a Mafia mobster is still a lot of fun, so to me this game can stand on its own. All settings were turned up, and the game tested at 1920x1200 and 1280x1024.

The 6870 manages to bring up the minimum framerate in this benchmark to 22.2fps at 1920x1200. Sadly I don’t have any results for a 5870 for this benchmark, so can’t see how that compared. With an average of 70fps for the 6870, you shouldn’t have any problems playing this game at 1920x1200.

Dropping the resolution down, brings the minimum fps to a consistent level, with the 6870 tying the Zotac GTX 480. It can’t keep up in average fps though, but maintains a framerate more than playable.

Metro 2033

Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands. In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. Metro 2033 makes good use of DX11 and boasts some pretty impressive graphics.

The Metro 2033 brings out the limitation in the 6800’s performance, as the 6870 and 6850 are no more than a fps apart at 1920x1200. This game needs something more powerful than even a GTX 480 to play maxed out at this resolution, so the barely double digit results of the 6800 cards is understandable.

Dropping the resolution down to 1280x1024 brings the bottleneck somewhere else in the system, and the minimum framerates for every card is within a single fps of each other (still at a very jerky ~9fps). Averages are still very close for the 6870 and 6850, with the 6870 managing to push an average of 21.9fps.

Unigine’s Heaven

Unigine’s Heaven benchmark is a tech demo that showcases the full possibilities of DX11, among other features, it relies heavily on a DX11 feature called tessellation, and has proven to be demanding for even the top performing DX11 cards on the market so far. Settings were left as standard, and the test run at 1920x1200 and 1280x1024.

The Unigine heaven benchmark is another graphically intensive test, and the difference between the 6850 and 6870 is again a single fps apart at both minimum fps and average fps. Compared to the 5870, the 6870 manages better minimum fps, but falls slightly behind on average. But with an average result only just breaking 30fps for both cards, if this were a game, it wouldn’t be very smooth to play at this resolution.

At the lower resolution of 1280x1024, the 6870 is able to pull away from its 6850 sibling by a few more fps on average.  The same performance is found relating to the 5870 as at 1920x1200.

3D Mark Vantage

There’s little chance you’ve not heard of 3DMark, and while 3D Mark Vantage is starting to be overpowered by the latest high end graphics cards, turning the settings up to the ‘extreme’ preset can still bring the cards to their knees.

The performance preset on 3D Mark Vantage shows us the performance we’ve seen pretty much across the board in our tests, with the GTX480 taking the lead, the 5870 slightly behind, the HD 6870 coming in third place, and the 6850 slightly behind that.

3DMark 11

Futuremark have been hard at work and have updated their 3DMark graphics benchmarking suite to make full use of DX11. Rather conveniently their naming of this new version of 3DMark is 3DMark 11. With the new benchmarks and improved graphical effects, it’s definitely something pretty to watch.

As expected, the latest 3DMark 11 once again brings the latest video cards to their knees, with the framerates dropping to very jerky levels.

When the intensity has been turned up, the gap between the AMD HD 6870 and Nvidia GTX480 drops to half of what it was in the DX10 version of 3DMark Vantage. The close of the gap is a bit of a moot point though if this were a real game as both cards were struggling to break fps above the teens anyway.
