When first turning the Video Mp3 400 on you are presented with a big X-Micro plug and fly logo and as seen above it lights up with many colours, this lasts for about 4 seconds which by that time the player mode comes on the LCD. You can really see the 65,000 colour OLED display comes to life with all the colours used just in the logo to get your mouth watering. Even though the screen is only 96/64 X-Micro have made a mirrored band around the LCD which really makes the display seem a lot bigger when in-use for some reason, maybe itís the way the screen lights up making the mirror catch the light.
After the initial start-up you are greeted with this menu on the LCD, and as said before you can really tell the LCD is of high quality with this picture above, all the colours are really rich. X-Micro have made this MP3 with an easy to use format so it is friendly for all to use and I was getting to grips with the Video 400 straight†† away. As mentioned before the joystick is the main controller in the menu section and all you do is press left or right to which ever function you wish, and press down the joystick to enter the function mode. This works really well and each section has a different icon to indicate the mode youíre at. I really like that this has the joystick controller because it makes the player much† better to control, Iíve had Mp3ís in the past with the normal button function and they work fine but I prefer this its just my personal taste.
Once plugged in using the USB cable your computer should detect the player straight away and I transferring music/JPEG files over pretty easy the only trouble I had was that I had to re-size my JPEG files to fit the players LCD screen properly, I re-sized them to 400/300 in dimension and found that worked really well.
As said above these are some of the other settings icons mentioned before and they are really full of colour as you would imagine coming from a LCD capable of 65,000 colours. The icons all have simple pictures on them as you can see to make this player a user friendly device and I think X-Micro have managed this excellently. There are 6 functions available: Music/recorder/video/voice/radio/jpeg and settings, the one Iím really interested to see is the video mode but more of that later.†
As with many Mp3s on the market these days the Video Mp3 400 has an built-in FM stereo Radio which can store up to 20 different stations, this worked reasonably well as you have the use the headphones as the aerial like many other MP3s on the market. Donít let this disappoint because the Video Mp3 400 recognize up to 99 recorded files in each directory, now that is a lot of music. Letís put this Video Mp3 to work.
Once the device is in playback mode the Video Mp3 switches to a blue interface with all your info displayed: Top left indicates what file format youíre listening to†† MP3/WMA music, WAV/ACT recording, AMV/MTV video (a special software included on cd is required to perform conversions). Top right indicates the current playback position and total length of song/video. Also along the top indicates the Repeat mode, there are 7 modes: Normal/Repeat one/Folder/Repeat folder/Repeat all and random to say a few.† Running along the middle of the LCD is the file name and scrolling along the bottom is the IDE tag of your song/video, if your song/video doesnít have IDE tag then the file name will be displayed instead (shown below). Right at the bottom to the far left indicates the current music/video file and the total numbers in that directory, to the far right indicates the battery and finally the volume bar.
Under the MP3 mode the icons are slightly different, the top middle indicates the EQ mode; there are 6 different sound effects: Natural/Rock/Pop/Classic/Soft/Jazz and DBB. But wait I still havenít finished, the X-Micro video Mp3 400 has Lyrics display and Tempo rate within the settings, these are excellent for learning languages because it switches to Double-screen or just singing along to your favourite song. But what really impressed me about this video Mp3 is the ĎOff Status Memorizerí especially when I was playing a movie because it memorises the current position of the song/video, even if you turn your player off it will resume from when you stopped it. Iíve never seen this option in a Mp3 before and I really put this function to use when watching videos, it worked perfectly and didnít once fault me. Another function that got my attention was the ĎFriendly Fade Playbackí which might not sound like much but when listening to music this function is much more comfortable on your ears as you get through each song.
This is where we come to the Standard Control Interface which can display up to 4 items at a time, and this is where you can adjust settings like Clock/LCD brightness/view what JPEG you want etc. Also this is where you can delete files/ get into Tempo rate/replay or just to power off as seen above. Again X-Micro have made this interface very simple and user friendly and I found no problems getting to know my video mp3 400. I would also like to add before we move on that X-Micro have added a mode called E-Book which enables you to read txt files, this again is new to me but it works because of high quality LCD screen, you can really see everything clearly.
This is where the fun begins. To start off X-Micro have supplied all the software needed for converting your video/music files on the installation CD included with the package which are MTV convert tool/AWV convert tool/AWV player and sound convert tool, but Iíll explain more on that later. I really couldnít believe my eyes when I first saw my video playing as seen above, the picture was crystal clear and the sound was amazing. I didnít know really what to expect to be perfectly honest because of the LCD being only 96/64 in size but the picture quality using all 65,000 colours had me speechless. (While playing about with the settings I found the fast forward and rewind function brilliant and not once did the player lag or become non watch able while using this mode. And I know I mentioned this before but the Off Status and Resuming play function really came into its own when watching videos because sometimes you canít sit and watch a hole movie without someone/something disturbing you, and with this function you donít have to worry about turning your player off.
The software as mentions earlier is very user friendly and it supports all Media files: AVI/MPEG/MPG/DAT/WMV/WMA/ASF/RAM and VOB so this should serve all your needs. Once you have your files you want all you do is browse to were they have been saved to and/or were you wanted them to be saved (default path is C:/) and off you go. As shown above the film I converted was the Italian Job and this took anything up to and above an hour but you donít loose any off the quality like most converts sometimes do. Covert Tool has the function to set the AWV file parameter, such as set intercept the video snippet, length, width and play frame which is great if you donít want the whole film on your player.
(Compatible with operating systems of Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.)
After the Converting Tool has completed the conversion your AMV Player will automatically start playing your AMV file, this means converting is successful as shown above.
Moving on to the Second most important Part of the Video Mp3 400 player and that is the Headphones. Firstly this is the first pair Iíve seen on the market that is the colour White, I know itís a really unpractical colour and will get dirty pretty quickly but they make a change from the boring Grey or Black. X-Micro has supplied you with the modern string Headphones to hang around your neck which I must say I do prefer none of that excess wire.† The sound quality is outstanding on these headphones, not once did I get the farting noise/hissing you sometimes get when the volume is high, they fitted comfortably in your ear and not once did they fall out while exercising. X-Micro has supplied foam padding as well with the headphones for added comfort, which is great because some Mp3 manufactures donít causing your ears to hurt, but as mentioned before you donít have to wear the string headphone if they not really your style.
The fitting from headphone to player is well made and really secure and there is not a chance of your player falling off. Top Marks X-Micro.
When powering the playing off you are greeted with a big BYE BYE as seen above and this is behind a blue interface. All in all a pretty simple to use feature packed player.
