Thermaltake 520w PST modular PSU

When opening the box the first thing I came across was the 5.25 bay PST, this was surrounded with bubble rap to protect it, letís get everything out and take a closer look.
Once you take the contents out you have the PSU itself, 2 accessories boxes, the 5.25 bay PST as well as the instructions, the PSU is also covered in bubble rap and is well protected. Now the nature of this unit is some what different to most PSUís so we will take a look at the main unit first.
Like the Amacrox Modular PSU I looked at a while back Thermaltake have kept the ATX and 4 pin cables separate and left them permanently on the main PSU. This is common sense in the end because these will always be needed. Also apparent here is that Thermaltake wanted to keep the inside clear and have chosen to use an added on section to connect up the other accessories to the unit.
Apart from that the PSU is pretty much laid out the way most 120mm fanned PSUís are and thatís not a bad thing is it, you get the silence of a 120mm fan as well as the convenience of a modular PSU. This is well constructed and I could find no faults at all.
Ill use this photo to show you what the connectors are on the PSU and this picture helps explain it a lot easier. On the left are the two PCI-E connectors, this means this PSU is Crossfire and SLI ready out of the box. The other connector is for attaching the 5.25 Power Station or PST for short.
The rear of the PSU is laid out as expected and is like 90% of other 120mm fanned PSUís and is grilled at the rear to allow the air to escape. Now we have looked over the main unit lets take a look at the accessories included.
The main PST is a 5.25 bay device that has 3 indicator lights on the front one for the 3.3v, 5v and 12v, the rest of front area is made up of a brushed aluminium like surface. The main point of this unit is to be the main cable output, by this I mean the PSU connects to this device and then everything connects to this.
The PSU plugs into the PST at the rear, it connects to the 8 pin connection on the left in the photo above and then the other components connect to this, a simple but more effective way of taking modular to a different level and I believe will make it easier to tidy cables than the normal modular style.
Time to get the boxes open, we will leave the bottom one alone as well its obvious that its just got the PSU power cable and screws in. so letís get the Power Station accessories box open and see what we have.
Opening the box brings no surprises of the contents apart from rather than braiding the cables Thermaltake have gone with a rubber like covering that actually works well. If we take all the cables out we can see what is there.
Inside the accessories box we have 2 PCI-E power cables, the PST power cable, 2 x 4 pin peripheral 1-3 connector, 3 x 4 pin 1-1 connector, 4 x 5 pin Sata connectors, 2 x 4 pin floppy connectors and 1 x 4 pin Power Station to mini Power Station connector (a very long 4 pin connector. The mini PST also includes some Velcro to attach the mini PST securely inside the case.
As you can see the mini PST is connected via a long 4 pin Molex, this in turn connects to any one of the Molex output on the back of the main PST we looked at earlier.
I think the mini PST is actually an excellent idea that enables you to connect other stuff such as lights and other accessories with out stretching the cables up to the PST or vice versa, it has 2 x 3 pin outputs, 4 x 4 pin and of course 1x 4 pin power input. I think the idea in this is so you could run the cable to the mini PST at the rear of the case to power a water pump for instance or a GFX card cooler. Without having to run the wires across, a good example of this use would be with Thermaltakeís internal water kit that uses a 3 pin power connector and is probably at the rear of those that have its case, there is also other cooling kits that use a 3 pin or four pin that would utilise the mini PST well. Personally I would have put the PCI-E connectors on a device like this as it would mean a much tidier install. Talking of installs letís get this puppy installed and test it.
