After using the DiskStation DS210j, I can confidently say that Synology really do make great NAS units. The unit itself is designed well, both inside and out, and although white products are always going to be associated with a certain other company, it does well to stand on itís own two feat in terms of styling.
Itís clear that a lot of effort has gone into the web interface on the DS210j, as pop up menuís and wizards float into place and fade in and out on open/close. Everything is laid out clearly, and even though there are a lot of options to configure, theyíre all documented clearly right there on the device.
There are so many little things that I love about this device, take for instance when it first powers up, itíll beep when itís finished powering on and is ready for use! No need to keep guessing by looking at the activity lights, you can access files the second itís told you!
This NAS box goes beyond basic network filesharing, with options from personal file sharing over the internet, to downloading files straight to the NAS and even hosting websites from it.
The Synology DS210j can be found online for just under £165 (with no disks), this might sound a lot for just the enclosure, but I think all the things you can do with it justify the cost. The Netgear we tested it against is about £10 less expensive, but I think the £10 is well spent on getting the better performance (and features) with the Synology DS210j NAS.
- Quiet operation
- Great performance
- Very customisable
- Confusing first time setup
Reality Check: The Synology DS210j looks good, and has performance thatís great too. The included feature set is huge and can do lots of impressive stuff over and above just network file sharing. A fully featured NAS device, what more could you want.
