Nanovision MiMo UM-710 - 7" USB Monitor

Posted by: Mac on: 24.07.2009 01:00:00 [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]

At the end of the day the uses for the Nanovision MiMo UM-710 are only really limited by your imagination. In the short time I have been using it I have probably only scratched the surface of what you can do with this rather cool piece of hardware. I know one thing though it is PERFECT for running media playing software on and no doubt IM software too. You could no doubt run hardware monitoring software on there whilst benching your PC to monitor temperatures / voltages etc, the uses really are almost unlimited. You don’t realise how useful a little screen can be until you start to use it.

It is unbelievably simple to install due to the fact it uses a single USB cable, many thanks to the boffins over at DisplayLink for that tech, which Nanovision have turned into a great little product in the UM-710. It looks great with its high gloss black with silver detailing and wouldn’t look out of place on a workbench or an MD’s desk or anywhere in between.

The one and only issue I have with the UM-710 is the fact I can no longer run Folding At Home on my graphics card for some reason, I reinstalled it after installing the drivers for the UM-710 but it wasn’t having it, I suspect it thinks the drivers for the UM-710 are the main drivers for the graphics hardware, if anyone has a fix for this please let me know.

Considering its size I guess the $119 (approx £70 at time of review) asking price isn’t exactly cheap, similar sized monitors are slightly cheaper, not much, but then it is USB powered and other monitors of this size would certainly require an external power source. Also the picture quality is fantastic and whilst I only have the touch screens at work to compare it to it is streets ahead of those.

Pros

 • Good sturdy build quality.
 • Simple to install.
 • Looks the biz, in my opinion.
 • A million and one uses only limited by your imagination.

Cons

 • Doesn’t seem to like working with Folding At Home for GPU’s.
 • Can “only” be used on a pc.

Reality check: If you find your desktop a bit cluttered but don’t have the room or means to connect up a second full size monitor then get one of these you will NOT be disappointed DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.

Many thanks to Nanovision for supplying the MiMo UM-710 for review.

I also feel I should send a mention out for DisplayLink for coming up with the tech which allowed Nanovision to produce such a useful product in the MiMo monitors.
