Installation is as always straight forward, just download the latest ForceWare drivers from NVIDIA and run the setup. It is as easy as that, I clean my drivers out before doing this and would advise you to do the same. There are quite a few tools to do this so don’t worry it can be pretty easy.
We will be comparing this card to the 7800gtx to see how it fairs as the 7800gtx set the standard for others to follow quite a while ago.

The games used to test the FPS on were Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R, Quake 4 and of course the included Serious Sam 2. We will test the synthetic benchmarks as you would at home, but the games we will use a very nifty utility called Fraps to monitor min, max and average FPS, this will be done on the same section for the same amount of time in each game to insure the test is as close to the original tests on previous cards. This should give you some idea of real game performance.
“3dMark is a graphics test created by the people at Futuremark. There is a lot of discussion about the relevance of such tests, and personally I think the only thing they provide is a reference for similar cards. Because of driver optimization, etc, the best thing I think test suites can be used for is performance testing with the same card at different clock speeds and different settings. Futuremark have recently released the 06 version of 3dMark, but the 2005 is still used by lots of people so I will be testing with both. Here is a list of the different technology used by the 2 versions:
As you can see 3dMark 06 introduces new technology like SM3.0 and HDR, as well as optimizations for dual core. There is also a huge increase in shader complexity and smooth shadows, both becoming main features of new games.”
As you can see the card handles the filtering very well and the performance drop is minimal, I liked the fact on our final overclock with everything up full the card still performed better than with no AA or AF.
As Racks explanation says, “these test programs are mainly for showing the penalties of image quality and resolution, at least in my mind, as some driver fixes can give 20% “performance increase” I see little gain in using this tool to compare different graphics cards.” However, nerveless here are the results received, 1024x768 and 1600x1200 was left out as we believe from our own testing that 06 is a bit Cpu reliant on scores.
The Score on the 3dmark tests proved to be quite an increase, but on 06 I would have to put that down to the CPU being a P4 dual core in the other tests and a core duo for this one, yes the improved GFX memory has helped, but due to our test beds CPU change I would have to rely on the gaming tests for a more accurate result.
“As mentioned before we use fraps to monitor FPS why in game, this was monitored for ten minutes and the min, max and avg results received are taken. This gives us the end users a chance to see what the real game performance is like.
As with all the game tests image quality was set at 4xAA and 8xAF were possible, with a resolution of 1280x1024 as this is the most popular resolution used at the moment, these are the results received.”

Thanks to the guys over at Doomey's home of [eXs]clan (22.214.171.124:13376) (http://www.exsclan.net/) for the fun while testing this
On the first game the card performs well with improved FPS over the older 7800GTX and on this game at least the 7950GT extreme beat its older 7800GTX brother, but was still out done by the X1900XTX .
FEAR is one intense game and to play smoothly really needs a machine with 2 gig of ram and a sorted Graphics card. To run this game at a high res with all effects on either a SLi setup would be needed or a card with 512mb of ram
In my opinion this card just about handled fear at 1280x1024 resolutions with the AA and AF on, it did perform better once over clocked.
All the above games were fully playable on this card at 1600x1200 in single player modes, which is good for those of you with a proper monitor capable of this res.
Serious SAM 2
On the included game (not a very good one in my opinion but that is just me) the card performed well enough to make you want to look at the eye candy in a high res, however need for speed carbon looked outstanding with all options up max and was playable very playable.
I wanted to still though take some screen shoots of some other games in action. Here is some screenshots of what arrived earlier in the day, so I thought I would show you screeners.
Nice, all these games were playable at 1600x1200 at max settings apart from need for speed Carbon, this game proved to be heavier on the card at this resolution.
Then again Splinter Cell double agent is a slow moving game so it would be hard to notice low FPS. So much so it is possible to play this game at 2048x1536! Should you wish too, Just check out that shadow eye candy….! which shows the Leadtek 7950GT Extreme 512mb is more than capable of dealing with today’s games.
