Enermax Liberty 500W Modular PSU

Inside the box, it’s a pretty standard affair, the PSU is well packed and protected, and the PSU cord is a UK one, which is good as I am in the UK…

Other bits and pieces are the manual, and this neat little pouch for all the cables!  I don’t think I can say how handy this pouch is.  First off, you don’t have to keep the cable either in the box packed away, or in a drawer making a mess.  Not only that, but this is a great storage case for all those cables you might like to keep handy, like USB cables for various devices to plug into the PC (like my camera).  Well done Enermax, I am yet to see another extra so handy with another PSU.  Really this should be a standard item with all modular PSU’s.

On the exterior, the PSU is a glossy metallic black, and looks very sleek.   The honeycomb grille is on the entire back of the PSU for good ventilation.

Underneath there is a clear 120mm fan, which not only looks good, is whisper quiet too.  Because of the ventilation on the back of the PSU the warm air should exhaust mainly out the back of a PC Case.

There are the power connectors on the ‘front’ of the PSU.  The 24-pin ATX and 4-pin power connectors are permanently attached to the supply, and there are connectors for a total of 8 modular cables.   These include 8 Molex connectors for IDE Hard disks, Optical drives, etc, 8 SATA power connectors, 2 floppy connectors and the 2 red ones are for  6-pin graphics power connectors.   What is odd, is there are only 6 cables supplied with the PSU, yet there are room for 8… maybe Enermax will sell different types after market.

All of the SATA and Molex connectors are in this standard layout which Enermax are calling the Eternity Pair.  There are 4 of these cables to make up all 8 of each connector, plus a floppy connector on the end of 2 of them.

The idea is that there is an SATA and P-ATA connector close together, meaning you can switch out your P-ATA drive for an SATA drive and not need to move your power cables…  that doesn’t really make sense to me, when you already have a modular system.  It could also be annoying if building a system with 4 or more SATA drives,(having said that most PSU’s only have 2 power connectors on each Sata cable) as there are no cables just with SATA connectors on them.  For every SATA drive you would be left with a useless IDE connector 2” away from it.  Not a major problem, but not as neat as you could wish with a modular system.

The braiding is well done, and while it is not on the entire cable, it is neat and the mesh used by Enermax is tight on the cables.  I do prefer the molded plastic coating better, as it is less prone to getting caught on stuff, but this mesh braiding from Enermax seemed extremely strong and little more resistant than other aftermarket products.
