Crucial Ballistix MOD Temperature-sensing DDR3

Crucial is yet again breaking the norm – in this instance by including a temperature probe on the dimms PCBs themselves. However, whilst these dimms are clearly aimed at enthustiasts/overclockers, disappointingly I couldn’t get these dimms past 1800mhz – even with loose timings. Maybe this would be achievable with significant additional voltage; however this remains to be seen.

Having said that, these rams are quick and reasonably priced – with a very attractive heatsink that should help keep temps down if you do decide to add more voltage.

Pros

  • Attractive Heatsink
  • Overclocks quite well at stock timings (8-8-8-24)
  • Is stable at 1520mhz with tighter timings (7-7-7-20 – results may vary)
  • First on the market to include a built-in temperature probe

Cons

  • Won’t overclock past 1820mhz (is that a con with 1600mhz ram?)

Reality Check: These dimms might not overclock as well as some on the market, however they will overclock with tight timings, and come in an attractive heatsink too. It will be interesting to see if I overclock more with more time (I will update) and see how far I can go, also once getting up to higher specs, the temp software will come in use.
